Artist's Comments

This is a contest entry for :iconlunebleu:'s Grimm Brothers Contest.

*Edit 2 I fixed up more of the shadows and lights, I still wasn't happy with it. I am now at least ^^ and I have submitted a details image. Look at the link below.*

*Edit 1 I fixed the shadows, so now it should look more realistic and I add a bit of light in other areas*

Image Details

The story I choose to portray is Maid Maleen

Maid Maleen, a princess, and a prince fell in love, but her father refused his suit. When Maid Maleen said she would marry no other, the king had her and her servants locked up in tower, with food that would be enough to feed them for seven years.

After seven years, the food ran out. However, no one came to release or deliver more food to the princess and her servants. They then decided to escape from the tower, with a knife that they had. What they found was that the king was gone and the kingdom no longer exist. Without knowing where to go, they finally arrived at the country of Maleen's lover, and sought work in the royal kitchen.

The prince had been betrothed by his father to another princess. This princess, lacking of confidence in herself, did not think that she would be good enough for the prince. She would not leave her room and let him see her. On her wedding day, not wishing to be seen, the princess sent Maid Maleen in her place.

At the wedding, the prince put a golden necklace around Maid Maleen's neck as a proof for the marriage. At night, the prince went to the wedding chamber where the princess was waiting. He did not see the golden necklace around her necklace. Immediately, he knew that the princess was not the one he was married to. Meanwhile, the princess had sent out assassin to kill Maid Maleen. The prince, who left the wedding chamber to look for his true bride, was guided by the shine of the golden necklace and came in time to save her. With the golden necklace as the proof of marriage, they were married and lived happily ever after.

Plot summary from Wikipedia

So now I'll explain a bit about this. It's Maleen in the tower she was locked up in for all those years, and the picture frame is showing her future of her taking the place of the bride and marrying her prince.

I love the model you used, and the red dress is really complimenting to your picture. The idea behind the picture is also very complex, I think, and your use of so many layers (model, floor, window, background, frame) all enhances that feeling.

HOWEVER (yes, there's always a but), on a note of constructive criticism, I notice that your lighting is a bit off. Both your model and the frame don't have shadows and the floor is the same lightness all the way around even though the only light in your picture is coming from the window. The areas further away from the window (like where the model is laying) should be darker than those directly in front of the window to make your picture more believable.

Sorry if I'm being rather brutal, but you've got a nice picture going on and I think your really have the potential to win this contest if you fix a few mistakes.
